Paul Borrow-Longain was born in 1980, in a small town in the Devonshire countryside, on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park. He successfully completed his primary, secondary and further education within the community. Paul earned three A-Levels (in the disciplines of Physics, Mathematics and Advanced Mathematics) in 1998.

While growing up in rural Devonshire, Paul took an active interest in various local organisations that taught him fundamental leadership skills, teamwork and the positive benefit of giving back to others within the community. He was active in the scouting movement and swimming /life saving clubs, and spent six years (1993-1998) in the Royal Air Force Air Cadets (formally The Air Training Corps). These extracurricular activities ensured that Paul gained a wide range of interests, experiences and opportunities during his formative years. At the same time Paul concentrated on furthering his educational goals.

Accepted into Cardiff University, Paul spent the next four years dividing his time between his family home in Devonshire and university in Wales. Whilst at Cardiff University, Paul was active in the local astronomical society and took a particular interest in raising the participation levels of young people within the Royal Astronomical Society. He jointly organised the first student conference of the Royal Astronomical Society, which was held in Cardiff during 1999. This achievement was subsequently recognised by Paul’s election as a Fellow of the Society. Paul’s interest in national politics also developed greatly during his tertiary education.

During his first academic year, Paul suffered an accident which took the use of his right arm, and he was subsequently diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Type One, now referred to as Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Even though this occurred early during his higher education, and resulted in him having to spend a considerable amount of time in hospital, Paul successfully completed his degree.

Paul graduated from Cardiff University in 2002 with a Master of Physics, with honours, in Astrophysics.

Having successfully completed his Masters degree, Paul was accepted to study for his PhD in the Department of Physics at Exeter University in Devon. His area of research while at Exeter University was in cataclysmic variables. During this time, Paul’s health was drastically affected and he had to spend a significant amount of time in hospital. Part of his treatment included spending some time in a decompression chamber, which was trialled as a way of relieving the symptoms of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD). The decision was therefore taken to leave University and dedicate time to stabilising his health.

During his time at Exeter University, Paul’s interest in politics, as well as his wish to make a positive difference in society increased, and he found that his high degree of scientific training and leadership skills were valuable in the private sector. After approximately 18 months, Paul relocated to Canada, where he lived until 2011.

While in Canada, Paul gained a deep understanding of Canadian culture including politics (both federal and provincial), economics, international trade & investment, and corporate management. Much of this knowledge was gained by active involvement in a range of Canadian organisations including, among others, the Royal Canadian Air Force Association (RCAFA), the Royal Canadian Legion, the Royal Commonwealth Society, the Canadian Monarchist Society and the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada. Paul is still actively involved in, or otherwise supports, many of these organisations. Such involvement greatly increased his experience and helped to grow his network of influences throughout the North American continent.

His time in Canada, a place he calls his “second home”, had an extremely positive effect on Paul. This is where he found his true direction in life. He decided to dedicate his life to three distinct areas: building a sustainable inter-generational business, actively making a difference to the world in the areas that he is passionate about, and family.

After suffering further problems associated with CRPS and relocating back to the United Kingdom, Paul took a few years to focus on his health, and underwent multiple operations on his spine so that a Spinal Cord Stimulator could be implanted in an attempt to achieve better pain management.

Having researched his family lineage, and having experienced family conflict in his late teens and early twenties, Paul decided to honour his paternal grandfather and changed his surname to acknowledge his heritage.

In July 2014, Paul re-entered the business world and began building an international consultancy firm specialising in foreign direct investment (FDI) and export growth between nations of the Commonwealth and the United States of America.

Today, while managing his neurological condition, Paul divides his time between furthering his business interests, increasing his support and involvement in charitable projects and learned societies, and dedicating time to his family and friends globally.

Paul has a significant interest in supporting learned societies and charities across the Commonwealth and the United States of America. His philanthropic positions have included:-

Committee Member, Devonshire Committee of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity

Patron, Devon Guild of Craftsmen

Director, Terrestres Servo Coronas

Director, College of Arms Foundation Inc

Vice-President, The Australian Heraldry Society

Trustee, Commandery of the Avalon Charitable Trust (2016-2018)

Paul is (or has been) a member of a range of other learned societies and charities, though not at the management level, and has in recent years been recognised with a number of honours, awards and appointments. Further details of these appear below.
