ARMORIAL BEARINGS

LION

Letters Patent granting an Armorial Achievement (Armorial Bearings) to an individual is an honour from the Sovereign., The Sovereign has delegated the power to grant arms to the Kings of Arms (Garter, Clarenceux and Norroy and Ulster) but only after a Warrant to do so is issued to them by The Earl Marshal of England, His Grace The Duke of Norfolk (Premier Duke of England), as head of His Majesty’s College of Arms.

In 2004, Paul Borrow-Longain was granted the honour and his Letters Patent were presented to him by Garter Principal King of Arms and Mr David Vines White MA, Somerset Herald.

Full Achievement of  Arms of Paul Borrow-Longain

The blazon of his Arms is:

Arms—Azure, three sea lions passant guardant Or between semy of estoiles Argent

Crest—Arising from a celestial crown Or (starred Argent) a demi-lynx affronte holding in the dexter paw a maple leaf Gules

Motto—Terrestres Servo Coronas Sidereas Observo (Serving Earthly Crowns while observing celestial ones)

Badge—A lynx’s head afftonty erased Azure eyed langued and celestially crowned Or the mullets Argent

The rationale behind the Achievement is that the blue background or field of the shield signifies the sky and the estoiles represent Mr. Borrow-Longain’s interest in stars as an astronomer and astrophysicist. The celestial crown and the far-seeing lynx of the crest carry this allusion further. The sea lions stand for both England and Mr. Borrow-Longain’s home county of Devonshire. The lynx holds a maple leaf to signify Mr. Borrow-Longain’s links with Canada.
